It is strange - I just had a conversation with a literary friend of mine the other day - we wondered what Mr. Wallace might be up too. We assumed he was busy working on his next Magnum Opus, that is some sort of follow up to Infinite Jest.

I lugged that dictionary-sized book around for months when it first came out and it made a huge imppresion on me. It seemed that here was a young author with all of the command of narrative and language of the old masters , and yet he was able to write, hilariously, freshly and completely in the now, in the hyper-modern moment.

To read someone is to come to know their voice , and so in a way it is to get to know them. I always felt some kinship with DFW if for no other reason than from bonding with his writing style for 1,000 plus pages. One of the brightest stars in the constellations of writers has gone out.

Early Riser Doctor's Hours

It's not quite 8 a.m. and I'm already sipping my first cup of coffee over the newspaper. I've been up for two hours and have already walked the dog, visited the bank and done a load of laundry. This isn't like me. Usually I am more of a night owl than a morning person.

I have to admit - a feller could get used to this. Even here in the usually frenetic Fresh pot coffee shop the atmosphere is somewhat austere and quiet. The morning still in it's pristine wrapping of possibility. Since I moved into a basement I have been having trouble getting up in the morning. There is no natural light. Often I would struggle out of bed, in dim darkness, at eleven o'clock in the morning.

I read an article on Slate recommending the use of Melatonin. My girlfriend has to wake at 6 this week to commute to a job out in the country so we thought we'd give it a try. The key is to take the Melatonin hours before you want to sleep. Like 5. I have tried the stuff before but it didn't seem to do anything. Last night I took it at 7 and by midnight I was conked out like a whack-a-mole. I slept hard. The kind of sleep you usually have to put in 10 hours of manual labour to earn. Kind of weird.

If this stuff allows you to pick your bed time at will then what is the ideal bed time for mankind? What is the best time to wake up? Five ? Too early? Six, seven, eight, nine? They each have benefits and detractions . . .

This all reminds me of my very good friend who once took up what he claimed were "Doctor's Hours". This meant getting up at 4 a.m. I think he went to bed at about 8 p.m. He said he had heard this was the schedule that busy doctor's adhere to although I have never heard of such a thing. Anyhow it seems to have changed his life. He said the mornings were so quiet and still he could get everything that he needed to do done by lunch time and then relax, because " nobody is gonna hassle you early in the morning, everybody just quietly goes about doing their own thing." Which makes sense. I think people don't start to get frazzled until about 2 p.m. or so. The doctor's hours worked, at least for him, he went from being a slacker to getting his homework done, graduating, traveling to Japan, starting a family and getting into law school.

So, what if there is a magic pill that can turn you into an early bird, would you take it?

Gigantic Buddha crushes Portland!

Rose or Wrestler

20 Actual names of rose varieties that would make really terrible names for professional wrestlers, mixed with 12 actual names of pro-wrestlers.

1. They sell pain-killers in Tijuana like they are candy, my friends and I bought a hand-full at an ice cream store. Frankly I don't see what the huge draw is - the only effect I noticed besides a mild euphoria was a general increase in my already powerful, latent stupidity to try new and dumb things.

Oh good Lord ! - what was I thinking?I have a whole new respect for bull-riders. While from the ground a mechanical bull does not appear to be going to fast and furious it is much more awkward than it looks. During the largest of the bucks I flew up into the air about a foot and came down upon the metal handle that sticks squarely in the center of the bull. Yowza.

It has been about a week and a half and I still can't sit straight. Granted, I can sit slumped, slouched, cock-eyed, I can lounge, sag, loaf or lean on one ass-cheek at a time, but I can not just plain sit.

This is what is known as a Coccyx fracture. It is a small wedge shaped bone, rather reminiscent of the fatty tail of a cooked chicken I think. Basically there is nothing to be done to help a broken Coccyx, other than the usual take tylenol and drink plenty of fluids, etc.

Oh the irony ! That is what I get for gobbling unneeded pain-killers.

Leaving the old house . . .

<img style="display:block; Woohoo ! Go Obama. This guy is the only candidate who was against the Iraq war right from the start. You have to admire that.

Here is the press clip -

ES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama and Republican Mike Huckabee surged into narrow leads in Iowa in a poll released on Sunday, barely a month before the state holds the first contest in a shifting 2008 presidential race.
The poll by the Des Moines Register, the state's largest newspaper, showed Obama with a three-point edge over national front-runner Hillary Clinton in Iowa, 28 percent to 25 percent, and former North Carolina Sen. The walls were bare and the lighting fluorescent. The teacher was saying that we had two weeks to study before finals and I was excited by this. I thought to myself - man if I study really hard for two weeks I can totally ace all of these finals. Which is interesting because in real life I never put much effort into studying for tests and so usually did poorly.

The tests were going to be on everything : Economics, Poetry, Calculus, Pottery, History, Music, Astrology, Chess, etc.

The teacher than handed out the take home worksheet. It turned out to just be a gigantic burger patty; the size of a plate. I stacked it on top of my books. Then three beautiful women walked into the class room. They were not only beautiful but also intelligent, clever and kind - I knew this in the way one simply knows certain things in dreams. They all said hi to me and were being flirtatious even though class was still in session. Then the bell to go home rang and I woke up.

The dream is interesting because in my Academic days I was never optimistic about tests as I was in the dream, and also I wasn't the center of attention for lots of beautiful ladies.

I woke up, took a shower, and as I was thinking about the dream in the shower realized it was merely the tip of the iceberg for a much longer dream that came before it, one which I cannot recall.

I had a long dream, only fleeting details come back to me now - red carpets, an elevator, the stars, galaxies, time, reincarnation, Little Nemo cartoons, waiters, standing on a precipice above the universe, watching the world or time be projected as if from a giant film projector, everything in the dream seeming deep and mysterious - such as if God was the film being projected then perhaps I was the projectionist running the film. And so on.

I conclude it is the last dream of the night we re-call most easily. That depending on which stage of the sleep cycle we are in there are deep dreams and shallow dreams. That deep dreams have an epic scale to them- like a movie or a novel. Also they are usually harder to remember because they must be carried to the surface of awakening from a greater depth of the subconscious. That shallow dreams come after deep dreams. That they have more a quality of a snapshot or a short story. The scene in them does not change and fluctuations or changes in character have more the dramatic value of a punchline in a joke or a question in a riddle , they are koans not on-going sagas. Yet we must assume that any shallow dream, positioned after a longer epic dream is likely to hold a key to the pattern of understanding the lager dream. It can act as a sort of lens.

Betel Nut, Miso Soup

This week's Mercury has an article written by a local hipster who trips out by chewing some Betel Leaf he bought at an Asian store. The article describes the high as being like marijuana laced Red Bull. I'm not a fan of pot or energy drinks but I'm willing to try something new, so I thought I would seek it out.

(I recently discovered Yerba Mate - a South American drink that is similar to coffee but without the post-coffee crash, if you drink enough it also produces a slight euphoria. I have been drinking it regularly ever since. )

If you have ever watched Bollywood movies you have probably seen people chewing Betel leaf. It makes you salivate heavily, and dyes your spit a blood red. Also it makes you feel like talking. In India it is used as an ice-breaker to start conversations. Interesting.

I went shopping at Fubon. A gigantic Asian Supermarket out on 81st and Stark. It turned out they were out of stock of Betel , although they sometimes carry it. Instead I bought the makings for miso soup. I love the miso I have tried at Sushi joints, so I am pretty excited to be able to make it at home. In Japan it is often eaten for breakfast. The basic ingredient is a spoonful of Dashi ( soybean paste) in simmering water. You can also add seaweed, dried tuna flakes, tofu and basically anything else that you like. So, until I discover a store that does stock Betel leaves, I have the consolation of homemade Miso.

running through fireworks

Last night I went for a run after sunset as the fireworks went off everywhere. I spent the afternoon finishing Roberto Belano’s long book “ The Savage Detectives”- while laying in my hammock and smoking a pipe. The book is a masterpiece and as infinitely sad as real life, it is also too long and very boring in parts – also like life. First I ran through Irving park. I ran through the white folks neighborhoods and it was a ghost town. Later I jogged back through my neighborhood which is more black and it became much more lively, crowds in every corner lighting off bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles.

One the third mile I was nearly shot in the face with a bottle rocket – it came spiraling across the street in a blazing red corkscrew - it was too stunning to react to until it just missed me – flew behind me and into a field. “ Holy Shit !” I yelled laughing - I heard the clamor of the house that fired it, yelling – “you almost hit that jogger! “ , “ Sorry ‘bout that!” etc.

On the way jogging up a hill I ran past a man in an SUV talking to a lady on the sidewalk , when I jogged by the man yelled sarcastically at me “ Nice job man, good work” or something like that. I don’t understand why it made him angry that I was jogging while the fireworks were going off. I guess he figured I was such a dedicated runner that no holiday could slow me down – quite the opposite is true, and yet I saw more fireworks than just about anyone in my slow 6 mile tour of N. Portland. It was like going jogging in a war-zone, really fun!

Something I was thinking about, but I can’t quite put my finger on, this morning. I have been wondering about a vague impression I have – that not so long ago I was a better/stronger person : by that I simply mean I was a person more true to myself. I am not quite sure what I mean by this – but when I think about the way I interact with people, my level of confidence and direction and my sense of self ; I feel something has changed. As though at one point I kept myself above the fray of many different social dynamics and have now succumbed to letting myself be influenced by other’s opinions, wants, and petty egos.

Now, it is early in the morning and time to write.

something completely different

I don't think I am going to have the time to maintain this blog, in the ensuing months. I am planning to open a bookstore and that will take some time. Maybe I will let this blog slowly transform into a record of my Herculean efforts to open a bookstore in the shadow of Powell's.

For right now I mostly have a bunch of ideas and plans and not a clear path to getting them done. So - it is about 10:30 on a Friday morning, the weather looks like it is leftovers from thanksgiving and Okkervil radio is bouncing out of my radio speakers.

The Incredibly large Sandwich

Today I went downtown and watched Jean Renoir's classic film The Rules of the Game. I was impressed, I think it is maybe the best movie I have ever seen in my life. You should watch it if you get the chance - but don't rent it on DVD, wait until it is playing at a theater because black and white just doesn't look that good on tv.

I couldn't find anybody else who wanted to watch it so I went by myself. Afterwards I felt hungry, so I walked to the nearby Safeway for a snack to eat, while I sat down and thought about the movie, and that is when I saw it.

The most ridiculously large sandwich I have ever witnessed. It was made out of an entire loaf of French bread! At first I ignored the sandwich - I went to look for chocolate milk. But the thought of the sandwich stayed with me. A sandwich of such immense size almost seemed like a direct challenge - like mount Everest, the nature of it's stature demanded that it be reckoned with and if possible - tamed.

I bought the Sandwich, and gloated over it in my arms, as though it were a trophy sized fish. Then I lugged it outside and down to the park blocks. Keep in mind that in the above picture half of the sandwich has been consumed, it was twice as big.

I worked on the sandwich in shifts, pausing to drink milk and call friends for encouragement. It was late in the evening and I noticed that the people walking by seemed afraid of the sandwich. Horrified even. They would not make eye contact with me, whether out of fear or aversion I do not know. Even the two cops on bicycles, who were kicking everybody out of the park at that late hour, turned their heads and cycled away quickly.

The only people who approached me during this monumental undertaking were two drunk frat boys who yelled at me from across the street. They demanded that I sell them some weed. I don't know why. I ignored them and continued to take steady chews off the sandwich - eventually they left.

In the end, I realized I had met more than my match in the sandwich - that it could not be done. I felt very light headed after eating only half of the sandwich, and I was afraid that I might black out there in the park and have to use the sandwich as a makeshift covering against nightfall. Dizzy, I biked home with the sandwich tucked under one arm like a two by four. I think I will feed it to my dog.

Houseshow: too much of a good thing !

We had a very kick ass show here last night. Portland seems stuck in November. Sad music plays on the cafe speakers, two crows outside fight over a carcass, and I just saw an autumn leaf blow past . . . it was crying.

To combat this downer weather here is a list of my top five summer songs - songs that make you want to dance, hop, run, and basically give you an emergency blood transfusion of sunshine.

1. Strawberry Letters 23 - Shugie Otis
2. Skin of my Yellow Country Teeth - Clap Your Hands say Yeah
3. Sinnerman - Nina Simone
4. Seadrum - The Boredoms
5. Summertime ( and the living's easy) - Sam Cooke or any version

Put these songs and a mix of your own on a tape. Pretend it's really hot. Sky-wolf, Storm Wolf, Beowulf and Cockeye) on an adventure underneath the depths of Portland. Captain Skywolf reported on this underground tunnel located in the West hills at the border of Forest Park. ( Thurman and 29th)

Getting into the tunnel was a challenge, it begins as a large stream that disappears into a concrete tunnel, the entrance from view by a strange wood lattice covering. Climbing down to the entrance is a bit of a drop so we dropped a nearby log into the hole to shimmy down. At the mouth of the tunnel we found an abandoned back pack with a cd player and other random shit. Someone said " looks like one of the last guys here didn't make it back," and then headed into the underground.

I had hopes that the entrance would snake it's way towards beneath downtown, and possibly hook up with the legendary Shanghai tunnels beneath Portland.

In the beginning the tunnel was fairly wide and we could stand quite easily. Shin deep water flows along the bottom. The sound of our boots slosh-sloshing and echoing, in what was basically a mile long echo tube, was constant.

Ten minutes down the rabbit hole and I dropped the bike light I was using as a flash light, it was swept away by the current. Luckily I had also brought a lighter and a small candle. Most of the graffiti was at the beginning. Some of it was incredibly skillful - especially considering it was in a place where few would ever see it. Pentagrams and devil heads seemed to be a major theme.

A few hundred yards, after the graffiti died off, things took a sharp turn. The decline became steeper - it was like climbing down a concrete water tube slide. The tunnel grew smaller so that we had to hunch over for the rest of the journey. Time, distance and place began to distort. We slogged on another 45 minutes and began to hear a distant roar of perhaps large hydro-turbine or subterranean waterfall. I estimate we traveled well over a mile beneath the posh houses of the West Hills.

The sounds of our voices echoed and carried far off only to return warped and distorted. I began to experience a strange sense of vertigo. It didn't help things at all that I recently had watched the Descent ( about a group of spelunkers who get eaten by savage, evil, cave monkeys).

When we had been underground for an hour and a half four of us decided it was time to return. We were running low on supplies - especially beer.

On the way back we went for stretches with our headlights turned off to fully experience the darkness. It was trippy - a few minutes of perfect darkness and you lose all sense of direction, the walls seem to drop away and become vast, you can't tell if you are going up or down, the darkness was visceral - you could feel it clinging to your face.

Right near the end of the tunnel, as we approached the fresh light of stars I took off my helmet and then, of course, immediately cracked my head - hard, against a low hanging metal box, resulting in a Fred Flintsone sized lump this morning.

I love getting into situations where just don't know what's around the corner - it makes you appreciate normal, everyday, life.

I heart the Waypost

My morning ritual consists of getting up, doing a few yoga stretches, and then stumbling on over to The Waypost, the best undiscovered coffee shop in North Portland ( and therefore the world).

Today I have been here for an hour, and hardly a soul has come in, which is part of why I love this place. The most popular espresso destination in NoPo is The Freshpot , which I've gone to for years. Sure, they got good coffee, but it is usually so packed I can never get any work done because there are too many people to talk to. For a long time the Freshpot let you take dogs inside which was cool, but after a run-in with the health department over this they banned all four-legged creatures. So me and my dawg have re-located.

The Waypost ( 3120 N Williams - a block south of Pizza a go go) is dog friendly, people friendly and work friendly. They serve great coffee, eclectic music, and it's quiet enough to actually put your nose to the grind stone and get into the book you're reading, or the ibook your toting, whatever. It is very laid-back, they have a piano in the front that customers are encouraged to play. At night the cafe transforms into a wine and beer hang-out with a full calendar of music and a motley assortment of talks on everything from a weekly Spanish class to a bookbinding presentation.

Micheal the owner says he wants to keep the place from ever getting too packed, so it is always a little under the radar.

Time to clean out the Basement!

Hmmmmyess? This morning is not one of those times. My eyes feel crusty, even though I just washed my face, and my thoughts are like a weather balloon drifting aimlessly around an empty sky; if my brain was a hand, then right now it would be too weak to grip a pencil.

Not that that's a bad thing ! It's kind of relaxing to let your brain go on vacation once in awhile. Maybe we should stop thinking of hangovers as a bad thing and call them by the euphemism "brain vacation". It's almost a zen thing.

I was reading in some psychology article that the lower a person's IQ, the less they get bored, because they are easily entertained. It makes sense. And while having a fuzzy-brained hangover certainly doesn't help me come up with any bright ideas, it's not boring. I am quite content to sit here this morning, sipping my coffee, spacing out . . . humming along . . .uh . . .what was I saying?

What's the story morning glory ?

Hi there !

Ok, I know that a blog is supposed to have a theme like politics or music or whatever.
